This is a really cute story. You know how things always look different when you are young. This story is a lot like that for Abbie. You see Abbie signed a marriage contract with Edward/Parker (friends prefer the latter name) when she was twelve. However, as she got older she started to have health problems & no one believed her. They assumed she was complaining about her period but being more dramatic than most women. Abbie did what she had to for her sake & fled to the box, as they call it. There are two realms one is veiled in magic & the other isn't. She makes a life for herself, gets a job, and most importantly gets diagnosed with Lupus. She learns how to cope with her disease & what foods to avoid to make herself healthier. Abbie was gone from the veil for five years. In that time she had gone to college & got a good paying job. She lived in a small apartment & had made a lot of friends. Abbie is also a princess from a country that the female rule. And because of her health she knows she can't replace her mother.
While she was gone Parker was left with no explanation as to why she ran from him. He was devastated because he loved Abbie. He wouldn't even consider marrying anyone else. Parker was slowly taking over for his father as king. His brother was supposed to rule before him but that all changed when he caught him trying to murder his father. Apparently, he didn't want for dad to abdicate the throne. Now his brother was gaining allies trying to stage a war to take the throne by force. This put Parker in a bad spot. He had to have someone track down his betrothed. If they marry they can rule both countries together & help win this war & save Parker's people.
Abbie panics when a couple show up at her job trying to enforce that marriage contract & take her back to Parker. The final nail in the coffin is when she learns her father is dying. Unfortunately, because of the impending war they have to travel the long way through the veil which could take weeks. The adventure ends up being anything but straightforward. There are so many situations that arise that make it necessary to detour their route several times. Eventually Parker ends up meeting up with them to try to convince her to marry him. He thinks if he can just talk to her face to face they can fix everything. Unfortunately, Abbie fears falling in love with Parker because she knows she can't be queen. She has quite a temper & mouth on her. And she ends breaking Parker's heart by refusing to marry him. He does the only thing he can. He leaves & joins his military to confront his brother.
When Abbie hears he left overnight she freaks out. She never expected him to leave. Now she realized how selfish she has been & how sweet & respectful Parker was the whole time. She treated him horrible. She does what she's good at & goes after him. She gathers allies to help Parker because she fears she will never see him again. She sees him one more time at her father's funeral. That's when she decides to try to find a loophole to win Parker back. But will it be too little to late? There's only one way to find out. You gotta read this book!
